ABSTRACT

Dressed in a Confederate uniform, a scout could travel behind enemy lines and go places a civilian would never be allowed. It was a risk the men of the Jessie Scouts volunteered to take—and many of them paid with their lives. One assignment Rowand was given was to deliver an important message from General Sheridan to General Grant. Rowand and his partner were given two fast horses and ordered to get through the rebel lines as fast as they could. By the end of the war, the Jessie Scouts were experts at spying. They expanded their disguises to include the civilian clothes of farmers and businessmen, but their most successful schemes involved dressing as enemy officers and delivering false information.
