ABSTRACT
Sarah Emma Edmonds was determined to serve her country, even if it meant disguising herself as a man. During the Civil War, women were not allowed to serve in the army so Sarah cut off her hair and dressed in men’s clothing. The soldiers talked freely in front of the slaves, and soon Sarah learned about the weapon and ammunition supplies, the number of troops and plans for movement. Sarah went on numerous assignments as a spy. It worked fine until Sarah became sick with malaria. Sarah knew she couldn’t go back as Frank. She spent the rest of the war serving as a nurse in Washington, DC, where she dressed as a woman. After the war, Sarah wrote a book telling about her work as a spy and a nurse. It was a very popular book, and Sarah gave all the profits to the US war relief fund. She met and married Linus Seelye and had three sons.
