US officials said it was a research outpost under the arctic ice of Greenland. They even made a movie about its construction. Camp Century was a small city buried under tons of ice and snow designed to let scientist and military experts learn how to work and survive in sub-zero temperatures. But in reality, it was a secret project known as Iceworm and it housed nuclear weapons that were aimed at the Soviet Union. It began in 1959 with the construction of 21 ice trenches. The Army Corps of Engineers plowed out the deep trenches and covered the tops with corrugated metal roofs. The real reason Camp Century was built was to house a new type of intercontinental ballistic missile called the Iceman. After the war, President Harry Truman was worried that the Soviet Union would recruit all of the Nazi German scientists. Truman ordered Operation Paperclip togo into effect.
