ABSTRACT

On November 4, 1979, hundreds of Iranians stormed the embassy. They climbed over the walls, broke into the building and took the American workers hostage. It was a standoff that would last for 14 months before the hostages would be released. Lee Schatz carefully walked through the angry mob. He kept his head down and didn’t talk to anyone until he reached the Swedish Embassy. Five other Americans, Robert Anders, two of his staff members—Joe Stafford and Mark Liejek—and their wives managed to escape to Anders’s apartment. Robert Anders called a friend of his at Canadian Embassy and told him they were trapped in the apartment. The story of the film and daring escape was so unbelievable that Hollywood took a page from Tony Mendez’s cover story, making two movies about the Canadian Caper, One was made in May of 1981 and another in 2012. The 2012 film was named Argo and won the Academy Award for Best Picture.
