ABSTRACT

James Bond is trapped by the evil villain and has to use one of his spy gadgets to save himself. During the Cold War, inventors on both sides of the conflict used newly discovered technology to equip their spies with tools right out of a movie. The race to get rockets and satellites into space resulted in the development of strong lightweight metals and plastics that could be used to make all sorts of new spy gadgets. Spies needed secret hiding places and gadget inventors went to work. They designed cufflinks that had a secret compartment to hide microfilm and hollow coins to hold messages or film. Besides disguising cameras, spies wanted to hide their weapons and the gadget makers obliged. Personal objects that a spy would carry were turned into weapons. Many spy devices are considered top secret and cannot be revealed to the public. But if the spies could imagine it, the gadget makers could probably make it.
