ABSTRACT

The spy was quiet as he closed the door of his apartment. He cautiously looked around to see if anyone was watching him, but no one was paying attention. It was a stormy January night in 1963, and everyone was huddled inside away from the pounding rain. The spy was relieved when the ship finally set sail. He had managed to escape. He would not be caught or stand trial in England and now he would spend the rest of his life in communist Russia. The next few weeks, the newspapers in both Britain and the United States were full of the story. Kim Philby, a man who had worked for both the British Spy Agency MI6 and the American CIA had defected to the Soviet Union. When Philby was a student at Cambridge, he was interested in communist politics. He liked the communist motto "From each, according to his ability, to each according to his need".
