ABSTRACT

The German Army had marched through West Flanders, Belgium, in August of 1914, burning and destroying the cities they captured. Marthe needed a way to earn a living and stay alive, so she volunteered her services to the local hospital that was now being run by the Germans. Germany used spies to help gather information, too, of course. She was wanted by the British MI6; a mysterious woman only Known as Fraulem Doktor. She was credited with training the most succes German spies. The German doctors at the hospital had great admiration for Marthe and the work she had done to save the lives of many German soldiers. They pleaded with the German officers and testified on her behalf, telling the officers that it would be horribly wrong to kill a woman who had been awarded the Iron Cross for her service to the German soldiers.
