ABSTRACT

By 1915, all of the troops were dug into trenches. Barbed wire covered the fields and machine guns were aimed at anyone foolish enough to stick his head above the deep ditches. The war had become a stalemate, with neither side able to move forward, and all of the men burrowed down into the ground. Britain began researching and came up with a vehicle that could blow through the barbed wire and roll over the trenches. They named the new vehicle Little Willie. Willie was shielded with metal and could move through gunfire. Lord Admiral Winston Churchill was impressed with Willie’s potential and ordered further tanks to be developed. The next tank was called Big Willie, or Mother. The big machine was able to roll over trenches that were 9 feet wide and plow over barbed wire like it was string.
