ABSTRACT

The Allies of Europe were counting on a secret weapon to end the war. It was a weapon that had the ability to produce guns and ammunition, could sail across oceans, and fight day and night. The Germans were not afraid of the Americans entering the war. But the Allied forces of Britain and France welcomed the Americans and affectionately called them the fighting Yanks, Sammies, and Doughboys. In April of 1918, the American Army consisted of around 140,000 men, but after war was declared, it swelled in numbers. By August of 1918, America had sent more than 500,000 men to fight the Central Powers. Along with them came guns, trucks, ammunition, and supplies. The Germans were stunned. They could not believe the numbers of fighters that were flooding the battlefields or the strength in the men fighting.
