ABSTRACT

Corporal Alvin York and his soldiers were tired from the battle they had just fought, they had captured Hill 223 back from the Germans and were told to march forward through the French valley to the next mission. The Allied soldiers were being mowed down by the zipping bullets. Men were being wounded in enormous numbers. Sergeant Bernard Early decided he had to lead a team to eliminate the machine guns or the entire platoon would be killed. He selected 17 men, including the sharpshooting Corporal York, and they set off for the machine gun nest. Corporal York was used to hiding in the brush and tracking animals. York’s church was against war, and when he was drafted, he wrote on his draft card, “Don’t want to fight.” Two of his commanders had long talks with him, pointing out Bible passages that showed that sometimes there was justification for war.
