ABSTRACT

Sam Cossman has done something very few humans have ever tried. He stood on the edge of a sea of volcanic lava and lived to tell the story. He also got some amazing video. Cossman calls himself a modern explorer and he uses technology to help him go to places where humans have not been able to safely visit. In 2015, he made his second trip inside the Marum Crater in the South Pacific. He put on a custom-made flame retardant suit and walked to the edge of an active volcano. In order to get down to the lava, Cossman had to use fireproof climbing gear to repel 1,200 feet into the caldera of the volcano. Going inside a volcano is incredibly dangerous for humans. Not only can burning lava kill humans, but there also are poisonous gases and high heat, it makes learning about the inside of the Earth really difficult.
