ABSTRACT

Measuring wind speed is one way that forecasters predict oncoming storms. One can build a model of an anemometer—the tool used for measuring wind speed. The needed materials are: 5 small paper cups, Hole punch, Scissors, 3 thin wooden dowel sticks, Empty water bottle, Sand, Stopwatch, and Duct tape. People need to punch a hole in the side of four paper cups. On the fifth cup, they punch four holes evenly spaced around the rim. This cup will be used as the center of their anemometer. Then they need to take two of the wooden dowels and slide them through the holes of the center cup. The dowels should form a cross in the center. Place one cup on the end of each arm of the dowel rod cross and secure the ends of the dowel rods with tape. People need to pour at least 2 inches of sand into the bottle to give it anchor weight.
