People too sick to walk were carried on stretchers by family or friends. They were all headed to the same place— to see the monks at the Order of Hospitallers of St. Anthony. The people called it St. Anthony’s fire and believed it was a curse from God. The only thing that seemed to help was visiting one of the many French hospitals the monks had built suffering from a strange disease that caused a horrible burning sensation in some limped along on crutches, their feet wrapped in rags, toes missing and fingers a horrible black color.
