ABSTRACT

The royal physician was called in. He knew exactly what was happening. The deadly sweating sickness had returned. The sweating sickness first appeared in the summer of 1485 during the reign of King Henry VII. At the end of that summer, after hundreds of people had died, the disease disappeared. People breathed a sigh of relief. And for several years, it seemed the sweating sickness was gone. The sweating sickness had spread throughout England and into Ireland and Scotland. It spread across the English Channel and on to the European continent, killing thousands of people. Modern doctors have been trying to solve the puzzle of the sweating sickness. Scientists are almost certain that this may be the sweating sickness. To be sure, they need to dig up the grave of someone who was known to have died of the sweating sickness and see if they can get a sample of the virus from the dead body.
