ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book aims to demonstrate a set of interrelated emphases/activities for use across K—12 with a common format and within key content domains. It describes a major emphasis on key 21st century skills in overall orientation as well as in the instructional experiences and assessments employed in the examples. The book explores students will consistently think critically, communicate ideas and findings, and collaborate on hypotheses, experiments, and data collection. Practices and portraits were grouped to illustrate student-centered expectations. The midpoint of the graphic demonstrates the relationship across student-centered expectations and/or similar tenets among the four sets of standards. All differentiation is based on an understanding of the characteristics of gifted and high-potential students and the content standards within a domain.
