ABSTRACT

Dimension 2 of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), crosscutting concepts, links concepts such as patterns, cause and effect, and systems with each standard. Some of these concepts are also found in the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), making it easier to find points of intersection. Furthermore, specific linkages to the CCSS in math and ELA are found at the bottom of the page of each grade-level topic within the NGSS. There are two ways to remodel content to engage and motivate highly able learners by making cross-disciplinary connections. Although the strategies are related, they are distinct. The second is to integrate standards from science, English language arts, mathematics, or other disciplines. The writing demonstrates the capacity to build argument, and the construction of mathematical models and analysis of data illustrate the capacity to interpret and transform ideas from graphic representations to verbal ones, by doing so, science, English language arts, and mathematics standards are addressed.
