ABSTRACT

Students should learn at a pace, depth, and breadth commensurate with their talents and interests and in a fashion that elicits engagement, intellectual curiosity, and creative problem solving—essential skills for future innovation. Type II experiences can also be planned in advance, particularly when there is new mathematical knowledge that the people would like to share with students or new experiences that will take them beyond the regular mathematics curriculum to challenge and excite them. There are also different environments in which to host Type II Enrichment. Instead, Type II activities pose rich problems requiring both critical and creative thinking leading to a much deeper understanding of the math. In Exploring Shape Games, students help to create games for Imi and Zani, their bird friends from the Amazon, who are developing these games for children all over the world.
