ABSTRACT

Type II processes are the strategies, skills, and dispositions that can be characterized as the “knowledge-how” components of learning in a digital age. Type II processes are necessary for students to become effective consumers of information and producers of new knowledge. In the SEM:Tech, a Taxonomy of Type II Processes for the Digital Age is developed. It is important for all students to develop thinking and problem-solving capacity like that in the Type II processes. Students must also be able to communicate in graphics (e.g., data visualization) and code (e.g., computer programing) to be successful in the rapidly advancing technology-driven world in which people live. With the emphasis on processes and skills becoming more common in the vernacular of education, a tremendous opportunity engage students in learning that reflects their interests and honors their preferred expression styles. Students can practice using the conventions and tools of a profession as they seek to solve real problems.
