ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 presents the design, methodology and implementation of an investigation that was intended to provide insights into the role of the positive emotions of curiosity and enjoyment as well as the negative emotions of anxiety and boredom in second language (L2) learning in online settings. The chapter begins with the presentation of the aims of the study and the research questions, the description of the participants, the procedures and language activities the learners performed in the virtual world Second Life, a detailed description of the research instruments by means of which the data were gathered, and the ways in which these data were analyzed.
