ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 reports the results of the study and offers a discussion of its findings. The focus is on the outcomes of the in-depth analysis of the quantitative and qualitative data. At the outset, overall results of the LLCS, LLES, BPELC-R and FLCA scales regarding the traditional context for the entire group are examined and three distinct student profiles are identified on this basis. Subsequently, the focus is shifted to the general levels of the four emotions under investigation indicated on a grid by the participants included in the in-world session log. More specifically, the findings are presented in the following order: (1) overall levels of the four emotions for the entire sample in the traditional context, (2) general levels of the four emotions for individual participants in the traditional settings, (3) self-reported levels of the emotions in question for the entire sample in Second Life (SL), (4) self-reported levels of the four emotions within Group 1, Group 2 and Group 3, and (5) differences in self-reported levels of the emotions under study from one visit to SL to the next for individual learners in the three groups. This is followed by the presentation of the participants’ emotional accounts of their visits to SL with regard to individual students within the three groups. The chapter closes with a discussion of the findings in terms of the research questions posed for the present research project along with the limitations of the study.
