ABSTRACT

The Prophets had attained a new conception of religion, which they strove, eagerly and passionately, to impress on their contemporaries. The progress of human thought has turned their idea of true religion into a truism, in their time it was new and revolutionary. The unbreakable connection between religion and morality is affirmed in the Prophets’ paramount doctrine about the law of God. The integral and high place which the Prophets give to morality in true religion has been misinterpreted to suggest that they defined religion as ethics and made ethics the whole content of religion. The Prophets’ denunciations of the false religion which prevailed in their times derive permanent importance from the fact that they point to dangers which have confronted, and confront, religion at all times. The worship of God which true religion requires is to love Him and to practise righteousness.
