ABSTRACT

The ruling classes of nations constituting imperialism, drawing lessons from history and taking note of contradictions, have undergone structural adjustments from time to time to weaken the forces operating to destroy capitalist mode of production. The American Revolution brought home the fact that military occupation of colonies could not be sustained for long. In India, the 1942 movement, the formation of Azad Hind Fauz by Subhas Chandra Bose during the Second World War and finally the Naval Multiny in 1946 compelled the British to give up the military occupation of India in 1947. Jawaharlal Nehru, the second most important leader of the Congress, had emphasized as far back as in 1929, "If people are to eradicate poverty, people must first do away with this widespread unemployment". Socialist China did not do any better and it was forced to retrace back its steps, and allow for some capitalist "relations of production".
