ABSTRACT

In Chapter 4, we consider how financialization has influenced the technological innovation of Korean companies, doing so from the following three perspectives. First, we analyze how managerial myopia caused by financialization has impacted R&D investment by companies. Second, we analyze the impact of managerial myopia on corporate innovation strategy. Lastly, by comparing trends in Korea with trends in OECD countries, we attempt to verify whether the short-termism of innovation strategy is a phenomenon of Korean companies alone or whether such short-termism applies across OECD countries. Our findings show that financialization reduces the radicalness of technological innovation not only in Korean companies but also in OECD countries.
