ABSTRACT

From early in our lives, we move away from eating purely according to biological hunger. Set mealtimes, work breaks, school dinners all provide necessary structure in our day but do not allow us to eat according to true hunger sensations. Because of this, the pangs of psychological hunger is misinterpreted as biological hunger which in turn leads to an unconscious need to eat. As this is not biological eating, there is no indicator to tell us when we have had sufficient food for our daily needs. In addition, many overweight people disconnect with their unwanted large body size and thereby lose the ability to detect informative sensations in the body, whether this is about food or something else. The author explains the importance of connecting with the body and introduces four exercises to aid reconnection.
