ABSTRACT

This chapter contends with the complexities of society and education that contextualise Lady Bird as well as related matters of gender, politics, faith, class, consciousness, income and race in representations of adolescence. It situates Lady Bird at a crucial time in recent American history, with the trauma of 9/11 and the war in Iraq all impacting on youth culture. It contends with the autobiographical elements that Greta Gerwig downplays, particularly her Catholic schooldays in Sacramento, and it considers Lady Bird in relation to the #MeToo movement that accompanied the film's release.
