ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the use of portraiture, including selfies, as a way of assisting in emotional learning and development. The presentation of ‘self’ through portraiture with reference to selfies is examined with particular reference to a world with increasing image management and social media. Focus is given to clients exploring what they like and dislike about themselves in photographs and issues for them in accepting what is revealed to them regarding both the positive and negative perceptions of their ageing process through life. A case study is provided together with further considerations of the strengths and limitations in carrying out such approaches, with particular reference to identity and self-image in a post-truth era.
