ABSTRACT

This chapter first focuses on two case studies of therapeutic photography. It provides the photographs for both case studies and a description of the processes under‑ taken. ‘Putting the (m)other first’ demonstrates how therapeutic photography can be utilised to work through loss and grief. In this case, the photographs are of the author’s childhood home upon the death of his mother. Here, a further question is examined as to whether the photographer is putting himself or his mother first when photographically working through his grief. The second case involves the author coming to terms with, and working through, depression and exhaustion. The chapter concludes with an overview of literature on the increasingly popular field of therapeutic photography.
