ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the influence of socialization, groups, and culture on the occupational choices and engagement of individuals and groups. The chapter begins with an introduction to social cognitive theory and how people learn through the observation of others. Concepts of occupational form, occupational development, and non-sanctioned occupations are presented along with the importance of family, peer groups, and culture on occupational choices made throughout the lifespan. The chapter concludes with an introduction to cultural competence and culturally responsive care in occupational science and occupational therapy.
