ABSTRACT
This chapter looks at a variety of theatrical gestures used in contemporary film and episodic series, telescoping away from the conceit of the myth of transparency. Various techniques explored include theatrical dialogue, direct address, the disruption of linear time, the use of a literal theater or performance space, anti-absorptive and reflexive cinema. The underlying premise of this chapter is that the techniques used to tell a story are just as important as the story being told.
