One Night of Dancing, 77 Days of Fear and Death book
Chapter 1, titled “One Night of Dancing, 77 Days of Fear and Death”, tells the chilling story of the final and darkest episode of the Trump presidency: Trump’s failed attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential election, culminating in the Trumpist-fascist Attack on the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021. It begins with the 2020 election and explains the curious sense of foreboding that fell upon many US-Americans after they celebrated Trump’s defeat. A great feeling of relief was countered by a number of frightening developments in the fall and winter of 2020: the escalating ravages of the pandemic that Trump had fueled and fanned across the land; the continuing and menacing strength of Trump’s support seen in his giant 2020 voter turnout and right-wing gatherings protesting the supposed “steal” of the election; the media’s seeming normalization of Trump’s efforts to nullify the election; the realization that Trump might well have succeeded in overturning the voters’ verdict had the outcome been closer; top Democrats’ insistence on staying politely committed to bipartisan cooperation with a party that stood with a leader who would not acknowledge defeat and accept a peaceful transition of power; the reluctance of liberal and progressive organizations and activists to take to the streets to stop Trump and the Republicans’ attempted coup before it could unfold. The chapter then gives a detailed account of the Trump-instigated January 6, 2021 Capitol Riot, accurately described by one Congressman as “home-grown fascism that was out of control”. The chapter ends with a nod to a small number of observers who predicted that Trump would not leave office without bloodshed and a discussion of the “pandemicide” that Trump committed during and after the 2020 election season.
