ABSTRACT
Chapter 7, “De-Trumping America”, reflects on the specifically late 20th- and early 21st-century neoliberal-era circumstances that brought Sinclair Lewis’s nightmarish vision from the 1930s shockingly close to reality between 2016 and 2021. Deeply critical of the Democratic Party (aptly described by Sheldon Wolin as “the inauthentic opposition”) and American political institutions more broadly, it questions the assumption that the corporate-oligarchic USA possessed a great “democracy” for Trump (and Russia) to attack in the first place. Based on the historical and social-scientific understanding advanced in previous chapters, it discusses proposals for building a genuinely democratic polity and society that can become fascism-proofed. The chapter’s recommendations are ultimately systemic, reflecting the wise counsel of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and based on the understanding that fascism is ultimately rooted in capitalist hierarchy, class rule, and the underlying amoral imperatives and operation of the anarchic, undemocratic, and environmentally ruinous, “expand or die” profits system. The biggest reason for finally transcending that system and undertaking what King called “the real issue to be faced – “the radical reconstruction of society itself” – is ecological: “eco-socialism or fascism if we’re lucky”.
