ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book. The book gives the reader an understanding of color and an approach to an ephemeral subject. Color is, in some sense, most closely related to music. They both have rhythm and harmony and are used to add emphasis and feeling. They can play directly on our senses and emotions and bypass our conscious minds, or they can be used for purely intellectual pursuits. There is a poetic aspect to each that can be hard to define. The physiology, religious background, cultural heritage and personal inclination determine the sense of color. Perceptual, psychological and pictorial concerns can also affect the way people choose and work with color. Understanding how these elements influence our judgments and choices allows one, as artists and designers, to use them more effectively.
