ABSTRACT

A color and its usage may distinguish a people and can be used for its symbolic nature. In the Middle East the red cross holds different underlying meanings and associations. In much of the Middle East, Far East and northern Africa the symbol for aid organizations is the Red Crescent. One of the most traditionally celebrated is a wedding and it can be used as a way of looking at the symbolic use of color. In the West, white has long been the customary color for the bride's gown. What may be useful in a dialogue about global color usage, and to bring a bit more clarity to the discussion, is to look at the five major world religions and their symbolic color use. These are Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism and Hinduism. Assimilating all of the information on global color and using it intelligently is part of the role of the artist and designer.
