ABSTRACT

Artists or designers rarely, if ever, work with one color alone, or dedicate themselves to only one hue. Each hue has its corresponding, or related, value. This is known as inherent value. Understanding this relation of each hue and its corresponding value assists the artist and designer in developing and setting up color harmonies. The simplest color harmony possible is a monochromatic scheme. There are three components that artists consider when working with color. They are hue, value and saturation. Each can be controlled and will have a significant impact on how the hue may be viewed. The circular format of the color wheel will now become more useful and meaningful. The specific placement of the hues along the circumference of the wheel will help illustrate the relationships or harmonies. While using color harmonies and the color wheel as a guide, there are other visual phenomena that affect the use of color and how colors interact.
