ABSTRACT

Color harmonies are as important to the sculptor as they are to the painter, animator or graphic designer. Toaster ovens, refrigerators, cars and even toys are all three-dimensional objects designed to fulfill a need or desire. In many cases for the design of a product, extensive market research has been done to select the color of the item. Since sculptures are three-dimensional objects, light plays an important role. The concept of allowing the actual nature and look of the materials to show through was at the heart of Constantin Brancusi's work. Artists often use the grain of wood or stone as linear elements within a sculpture. Artists can use a variety of paints and colorants when creating a three-dimensional work. Color can be used to enhance the three-dimensionality of an object and make the shapes appear more deeply cut into the form, or it can be used to deny the dimensionality of the form and flatten it down.
