ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the book, explaining that it is about group-based intervention work with men who have histories of domestic violence. It emphasises that rehabilitative work with domestic abuse perpetrators is an important part of a broader strategy to tackle violence against women. This chapter explains that the approach taken differs from other examinations of perpetrator interventions because of its focus on the interactive dynamics within group sessions, and the experiences of people who attend them, rather than looking primarily at content or the outcomes. Brief details are provided about the research on which the book is based. This involved participant observation undertaken while working as a facilitator for two accredited probation programmes for men convicted of offences involving domestic violence: the Integrated Domestic Abuse Programme and the Building Better Relationships programme. The participant observation was combined with interviews with men who had been referred to one of the programmes and facilitators who had delivered them.
