ABSTRACT

Therapists who wish to use bibliotherapy to help children deal with problems must consider several factors when selecting books. Pardeck and Pardeck and Rubin outline the major principles of bibliotherapy as follows: The bibliotherapeutic process includes a series of distinct activities critical to using books in treatment. Zaccaria & Moses conclude that there is virtual agreement among studies conducted on bibliotherapy: the reading of a book must be accompanied by discussion and/or counseling. Therapists who use bibliotherapy in treating children of divorce must be sure that the books used are realistic. The therapist must consider the child’s interest and reading levels as well as the problem being faced by the child when selecting books for treatment. Chronological age and the level of maturity of the child largely determine the child’s interest level. The therapist must consider several factors when selecting books for treatment.
