ABSTRACT

Child abuse is one of the major social problems nationally and internationally. If one uses bibliotherapy with abused children, it should be clear that the technique must be used in an appropriate fashion. Germain, Brassard, and Hart suggest that emotional symptoms such as anger, fear, denial, repression, and apathy are often a result of child abuse in children. The practitioner must realize that child abuse is part of an overall pattern of abusive behavior, the family system, as well as the personality make-up of the perpetrator. Helpers who work with abused children should be prepared to provide support and understanding for all persons involved in the abuse. The practitioner must realize that child abuse is part of an overall pattern of abusive behavior, the family system, as well as the personality make-up of the perpetrator. Children must be allowed to ventilate their feelings in order to resolve the issues that confront them related to the abuse.
