ABSTRACT

Children’s literature has been widely used as a rich resource for helping children understand and cope with fear. However, if parents or other adults support children as they learn to deal with these kinds of fears, they may cause problems in later development. An excellent strategy to deal with such fear is to help the child confront it in a supportive fashion. As children grow older, they may deal with fear by hiding their face in a pillow or simply running from the object causing fear. One of the most important emotions that children have to cope with is fear. All children have fears that appear to be related to the developmental process. As children grow older, they have a tendency to learn to avoid those situations that are likely to stimulate fear responses. Finally, parents and other helpers should realize that all of us have fears at times as well as anxiety.
