ABSTRACT
As a result of the impact of COVID-19, the entire world has had to re-think what travel means. This is also apparent for travel writing, which has traditionally relied on mobility and tourism. Despite this complication, it’s worth remembering that we’re not the first who have had to rethink the notion of travel. Through historical lockdowns and bouts of enforced isolation, people have also found a way to write, and to transport themselves beyond their confinement. This introductory chapter provides an overview of the main themes in the chapters that follow.
