ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the assets and the administration of the Teutonic Order in the southern part of Italy. The first section is dedicated to the bailiwick of Sicily and its commanderies such as Palermo, Messina, Agrigento and those in big rural estates, mostly in the western part of the island. The second concerns the bailiwick of Apulia, with a long series of commanderies and estates located mostly in today's Region Apulia but also in neighbouring Basilicata, with the main point of gravity being the fertile lands of Capitanata, in the actual Province of Foggia. The both southern bailiwicks were prosperous and extensive, as the many existing sources confirm.
