ABSTRACT

The Vietnamese people have a traditional passion for knowledge. Each province had only ten primary schools, there were no more than twenty elementary schools throughout the country, and the number of secondary schools could be counted on the fingers of one hand. There is one primary school for every village and on the average, one elementary school for every two villages, and in many delta provinces each district has a secondary school. In all North Vietnam, there are twenty-eight universities and 140 middle-level vocational schools. The province which has sustained the heaviest casualties is Ha Tinh: 118 us air raids on schools have resulted in 101 pupils and 14 teachers killed and 76 pupils and 16 teachers wounded. Ha Tinh alone has had thirty-seven schools completely destroyed; twenty-six schools in Thanh Hoa are out of use.
