ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how musicians can have several streams of income to create a sustainable career in the new music industry. From traditional methods of making money (live gigs, festivals, merch sales) to newer sources of income (YouTube Ad Sense, NFT sales) the author discusses the various steps that musicians must take to set up these streams of revenue whilst always noting their pros and cons. The author discusses potential drawbacks of newer streams of revenue due to a lack of infrastructure which may be strengthened in the coming years. Many real-world examples illustrate the different methods of generating revenue. Chinese Music Business Student Yuyan Wang explains how the main methods of generating revenue differ between China and the West.
