ABSTRACT

A precis of the argument as-a-whole is presented: Weber’s value-sphere theory of modernity will be extended to include the spheres of home, nature and sport. A brief survey of the secondary literature indicates the originality of this Weberian perspective. Working on the assumption that Weber’s works can legitimately be read in different ways, some passages from ‘Science as a Vocation’ are examined to show both the standard subjectivist interpretation and also the value-sphere theory of meaning that is embedded in the text. The polytheistic model put forward by Weber here sets up the argument to come by tying together modernity and religion, and it also presents us with an invitation to add to the pantheon of value-spheres - an invitation that is accepted.
