ABSTRACT

Change in settlement pattern and land utilization has also come to the rolling highland which west of Jamuldhara extends as far as the vicinity of Utnur. The settlements have greatly increased in size, partly because of the natural growth of the population and partly because of the movement of landless Gonds from Both and Kinwat to Utnur taluk where they were able to obtain land. If in times when the Gonds had full freedom to choose their villages sites they evolved a standard type of settlement, such a time must lie far back, and the variety of settings in which we find their villages today is as great as the country’s colourful scenery. Very different from nucleated villages such as the present Netnur and Sirpur are settlements consisting of several scattered clusters of houses. Most Gond houses built in traditional style conform closely to one pattern. Gond houses contain little in the way of furniture.
