ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the need to reevaluate how we approach data analysis based on advancements in technology, the loss of consistent summative data from previous academic years, and concerns about data reliability due to limited measures. All of these factors drive us to find more impactful ways to utilize data, particularly in real-time to maximize student achievement. Actionable formative data accessibility and use can accelerate learning and shorten response times for reaching students who need additional support. There is a growing focus on effective organizational data use through the use of technology. Data points are only as useful as the trust educators put in them, so establishing their reliability is critical. With formative assessments, there are few data points each time and they are recently gathered, leading to increased reliability and applicability. Advancements in technology can improve reliability and the timeliness of data points, but it is ultimately the organization’s vision that will drive how formative data is used.
