ABSTRACT
Chapter 3 pursues the experiences of curse affliction as essential to the understanding of the complexity of occult phenomena and shamanic practice in post-Soviet Kyzyl. It commences with the exploration of what it means to be a human person in comparison to other kinds of persons in Tuvan ontology, such as spirits and animals. The chapter follows Hovalygmaa as she visits the victims of curse infliction. Looking at different case studies, it discusses how cursing creates turbulence and thus transforms people into turbulent beings. Through analysing the images of the curse victims drawn by the shaman during the rituals, the chapter concludes by exploring the idea of what it means to have a cursed personhood.
