ABSTRACT

For Black women, the realities of durable, intergenerational oppression coupled with the power of ideas means that Black feminist thought will persist as long as the need for it endures. The goal of Black feminist thought of fostering Black women’s empowerment may remain intact, yet the conditions under which Black women’s intellectual activism occurs have changed dramatically. In the realm of cultural politics, Black women’s intellectual activism increasingly takes place in mediated space, namely, a hybrid location of being located both in a physical place and a digital space. Black feminist thought’s ability to remain oppositional will rest on the power of its ideas within contemporary cultural politics. The expansive understanding of the relationship between Black women’s intellectual activism and community organizing has important implications for building a future for Black feminist thought. Intergenerational hope has long been central to the visionary and pragmatic work of Black women intellectual activists in carrying forward visions of freedom.
