ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the process of identification, diagnosis, and assessment of exceptional children. The evaluation process either at the early intervention (Part C) or at special education (Part B) is concerned with determining the child’s eligibility for services, setting developmental and educational goals, and designating therapeutic and educational services for the child. A team of professionals along with the family members are responsible for deciding on goals and services for the child. A multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, or transdisciplinary professional team delivers intervention services and assesses the child’s progress. An ongoing assessment of the child that is linked to intervention and the curriculum informs educators of the child’s progress toward the child’s developmental and educational goals and outcomes. Regular program evaluations are important to confirm whether the intervention has been effective.
