ABSTRACT

Because people are ‘predicably irrational’ (Ariely, 2009), it is foolish to assume that application of a risk process will give meaningful, reliable outputs. Bias is inherent and must be acknowledged and dealt with as far as practicable. Chapter 3 provides more detail on this by outlining common sources of bias and how they play out in practice. It can all sound impossible, but there are practical things people can do to address inherent biases and make their risk-based decisions as rational as possible. Practical approaches to address the complex challenges are included at the end of the chapter. Facilitation is a key part of this.
